Nappy Basics

The first thing to say is don't be overwhelmed by the choice! You should not feel that you have to decide to one system and stick religiously to it. Many people have a wide range of nappies in their collections for varying purposes. That is one of the beauties of using cloth nappies - the versatility.

All-In-One

Generally the most expensive type of nappy

Pocket

Pocket made by having liner layer and waterproof layer stitched together leaving an opening to hold a folded absorbent pad or insert
Can vary amount of absorbency for different children/times of day
Different sizes or one size fits from birth to potty training depending on the brand
Slim fit
Can be prepared in advance thereby making it as easy to use as an all-in-one
Fasten with either poppers or hook and loop
Separate waterproof cover and absorbent layers allow fast drying
Generally a more expensive type of nappy, similar to all-in-one

Separates - Shaped

Shaped, folded and stiched for convenience with separate waterproof cover
Snug fitting with elasticated legs and waist - generally best for containment
Different sizes or one size fits from birth to potty training depending on the brand
Fit slightly less bulky than all-in-one type but more bulky than pocket type
Fasten with either poppers, hook and loop
Drying times which vary greatly according to fabric
Cheaper option than all-in-one or pocket types

Separates - Flat

Fold and fasten yourself using nappi nippas
Longest lifespan - no elastic to wear out!
Separate waterproof cover
Different sizes or one size fits from birth to potty training by varying the fold
Very quick drying time
Most economical system

Waterproof Layer or Wrap

Covers nappy to prevent leaking
Available in a wide variety of sizes and fabrics
Fastens with aplix (Velcro) or poppers and in some cases pull-on or tie-on
Generally fast drying
Plain and patterned designs available

Liners

Available in two main types - paper and washable
Used inside nappy and allow liquids to soak through but not pass back to baby's skin
Allow easy removal/flushing of poo from soiled nappies
Fleece liners allow runny poo to soak into nappy avoiding potential leaks

Booster Pads

A shaped cloth pad used with nappy to add extra absorbency
Ideal for temporary boosts such as night-time, car journeys and at times when wetting increases
Come in variety of sizes and fabrics
